Spring 2014 Film Watchlist

Although we are supposed to be enjoying the spoils of Spring turning to Summer, Mother Nature is toying with us here in the Midwest, preventing is from the usual outdoor activities. Luckily there are plenty of gems on their way to the screen

Keep an eye out for these upcoming releases.

Maps To The Stars

A recently released NSFW trailer sets the tone for this racy thriller. The movie, which will likely have its first screening next month at the Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of a dark and sordid series of entanglements up in the Hollywood hills.

Julianne Moore stars as Havana Segrand, an actress in search of a new personal assistant — which she finds in the form of recently institutionalized Mia Wasikowska. Robert Pattinson also stars, as Havana Segrand’s limo driver and sometimes lover. The David Cronenberg-directed flick looks amazing thus far, although it’s unclear when the public will be able to enjoy the angsty tale.

Theatrical release date for Maps To The Stars to be determined.

Only Lovers Left Alive

Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddelston play Adam and Eve- a pair of vampires dwelling in present-day society. Adam, a reclusive musician and tortured soul, lives in Detroit, where his wife Eve returns to care for him.

Mia Wasikowska plays Ava, Eve’s younger sister who brings trouble to the vampire couple upon her arrival from Los Angeles.

A dark and moody atmosphere accompanies the film (typical of the vampire-flick genre) however what’s unique is that director Jim Jarmusch created a very humanized, cultured and cool vampire-hipster characterization of Adam and Eve.

The soundtrack is another win. Can’t wait to see this one.

Only Lovers Left Alive will be in theaters January 20th.

Palo Alto

We’ve already called your attention to this Lolita-esque tale from the pen of James Franco- but it’s definitely on our Spring 2014 Watchlist, so it’s worth mentioning again.

Franco plays a soccer coach/ lusting single dad who casts his attention on one of his young soccer team members, played by Emma Roberts. Directed by Gia Coppola, it’s a film we’re highly anticipating, as it’s the young Coppola’s first attempt at the family business.

Palo Alto will be in theaters on May 9.

Maleficent

Angelina Jolie seems to have been born for this role, as the beautifully terrifying Disney villain, Maleficent. The untold story of the evil element in the old favorite, Sleeping Beauty, this film  reveals the events that turned Maleficent’s heart to stone and led her to curse baby Aurora.

Jolie-Pitt daughter Vivienne makes a cameo as toddler Aurora, while Elle Fanning steps in to bring Sleeping Beaty to the screen for the remainder of the film.

A Disney film, yes, but one with a darker side. The rendering is sure to be breathtaking, as it’s directed by Robert Stromberg, who has had his hand in production design for movies like Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, and Oz The Great & Powerful– all visually stunning displays.

Maleficent will be in theaters May 30.

Transcendence

Johnny Depp and futuristic mind-control? We’re in.

Depp plays Dr. Will Caster, the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence. He’s working to create a machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.

However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence.

Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that becomes terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

Transcendence is in theaters as of April 18.

The Other Woman

Leslie Mann, Nicki Minaj, Cameron Diaz and Kate Upton star in The Other Woman.

We can’t ignore this feel-good chick flick on our watch list. Girl power, ok?!

Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton and Nicki Minaj team up to form a man-eating cheater-dominating girl squad in this comedic film from Nick Cassavetes.

After discovering her boyfriend is married, Diaz’ character embarks on a journey to get even. Along the way she runs into the wife he’s been cheating on (Mann) and another blonde-with-a-body mistress. (Upton)

The Other Woman will be in theaters on April 25.
